Report on FENDERIST Vol.09 – Part2
In the Japanese custom car scene, a subtle but noticeable shift is taking place.
For the past decade or so, simple and clean custom styles influenced by Instagram and other social media platforms have dominated the scene. However, recently, custom techniques and parts reminiscent of the vibrant 1990s Japanese car culture have been making a strong comeback.
In Japan, there is a strong preference for what is known as “当時物” (tōjimono) — original period parts from the past. Japanese wheel manufacturers have been quick to respond by reissuing many of their classic hit models. Recent examples include WORK’s VS-KF and Weds’ Bazreia.

As the saying goes, trends are cyclical — and the custom car scene is no exception. A quiet evolution is clearly underway.
If you’re interested, I highly recommend picking up some old Japanese car magazines from the ’90s. They contain a wealth of information you won’t find on social media, and looking through them today feels incredibly fresh and entertaining.
